Cash games vs Live Casino

Up until recently I played poker exclusively online, but mostly sit and go tournaments….
but for the past month I have been going to the Casino on Fridays. I was just in shock as to how loose and soft the cash games were. What I like to do is sit down and just fold a lot to see the players in a action and get a read on what they play. Then I wait until position and decent hands to get involoved. Yesterdays’s session was the longest because I went alone and did not have any of my friends telling they went broke/tired and want to go home. I will be honest, I am not a + ROI player online, but live I am up $1000CDN. I am thinking of completly quiting online poker….

I would like to add that I mostly play loose from late position with connectors. Those are the hands that win big pots with lots of business. Dont even get caught up with AA and KK, and dont let it worry you that they rerely win.

The other thing I found out that there are tournaments there on the weekend, so I want to give that a try since so much of my training is for tournament situations. Another thing I wanted to mention is this: My second hand last night, and I get involoved in a huge pot on the turn i get re-raised all in. Which is only %40 more of my stack. I am pretty sure I am ahead of this guy, but I am contemplating folding, then I looked up at him and for a split second I saw this look of desperation in his face I will never forget. I call, and he shows top pair with deuce kicker. I take it down and proceed to felt him twice later. I knew that the guy sitting infront of me would shake whenever he had a monster, and that the guy to my right was tilting… When I play live I am in tune with what’s going at the table….

I guess I am a little sad to not want to let online poker strategy go. That’s why I am posting this here, to hear what you guys say.

Nothing can beat the experience of Live play. On the other hand, nothing can beat the experience of gaining experience of online play. that is to say you can get TEN YEARS of poker playing hand experience in one year online comparable to live. In other words, for you to gain so many hands played live as you do online would take most people 10 years.

A lot of THAT transfers to live. You know the odds, predictability, what a player should or should not do, what position is best to play what hand, what to watch for in the mechanics of a player’s play. Live you have the benefit of the visual tells and a true random deal 99% of the time. (nothing is 100% perfect)

I wouldn’t necessarily quit online play. But perhaps seriously curtail it in favor of the local live games. Like you I am up live. (I’m seriously down online) Unlike you the luxury of live play for me is too far and too isolated as to times I could go. Their tournies are at times I have to be at the office and so on. There also isn’t any “low stakes” games like there are online either. You go with a br or you don’t go. It’s not like you can build one from scratch. Laughing

both have their place IMO.

JP thanks for your reply. I agree on your point with regards to gaining experience faster online. I would be lying if I said that online experience did not improve my live game. I incorporate my opponents betting amounts and more importantly patterns in my live play, but unlike playing online I have the ability to look at them. With some players its pointless others will give off a vibe or a tell which sometimes along with correct pot odds will lead me to make the correct decision.

Now here is my dilemma:

Playing at the casino may not be as challengeable as playing a decent sit n go, but more profitable. Playing poker will never be my main mean of income as I have a career that I love, but I do play poker to be profitable, and over the long term a player who calls himself successful must be profitable. I can be profitable live, but even though I have won some larger sit n gos online at poker stars and FT I am nowhere close to being profitable.
After being up live, and down online for the past month ( I am still up overall)I have excluded myself from the poker sites I play on to give myself a week to think about things.

At the end of the day I want to be able to say that I am a good player. But how can I call myself good if I loose online? On the other hand knowing that I learned so much from online play while not being profitable leads me to believe that I should stick to it and try to become profitable while playing live to cover my loses online. (Have to admit it sounds bad)

Anyway I would love to hear what you guys have to say…
